“I first discovered ACON’s Love Project through the Mature Age Gays social club for older gay men. My involvement began with a life model sketch class at ACON Café. That led me to the monthly Love Club gatherings and then to other activities: Afternoon Delight movie events, Queer Screen sessions, and outings to the Art Gallery of NSW. I also took part in surveys on LGBTQ+ issues, especially those affecting seniors.
During the COVID lockdowns, the Love Club ran regular online meetings that really helped me through a difficult time. The sense of connection and continuity was so important.
I originally came from Japan, and the Love Project has made me feel safe, included, and part of a wider LGBTQ+ community. Every event I’ve joined has been thoughtfully organised, welcoming, and either fun or informative. I’ve met many lovely and interesting people through these activities, and I now catch up with some of them over coffee or lunch. These connections have broadened my horizons—and made me realise it’s time to give back to the community, including through volunteering at Qtopia Museum. None of this would’ve happened without the Love Project. It’s had a meaningful impact on my life, and I’m truly grateful.”
