CULTURE IS HEALING: SUPPORTING LGBTQ+SB FIRST NATIONS HEALTH

In a society that has long silenced or erased Indigenous voices, reclaiming language, culture and identity is not only powerful, it is political. That is why ACON, NSW’s leading LGBTQ+ health organisation, proudly supports the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTQ+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy communities through programs that centre pride, culture and community leadership.

First Nations LGBTQ+SB people have always been part of this continent. But many still face poorer health outcomes, including higher rates of mental health distress, suicide, homelessness and exclusion from inclusive care. These challenges are not caused by identity, but by the continuing impact of colonisation, systemic racism and ongoing discrimination.

ACON works in partnership with community to change this story. Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Programs are created by and for mob, recognising the strength found in cultural identity and lived experience. Through peer education, social support, health promotion and community gatherings, we are building spaces where First Nations LGBTQ+SB people can connect, heal and thrive.

We also recognise that language holds power. The words we use to describe ourselves, whether in English or in language, shape how we are seen and understood. For many Sistergirls, Brotherboys and LGBTQ+ mob, reclaiming or creating language is an act of survival, of resistance and of self-determination. It is a way to name who we are, on our own terms.

At ACON, we honour the strength of Blak queer voices and identities. We believe that improving health outcomes begins with listening, and continues with action that supports leadership, self-expression and cultural safety in every part of life.
