WARD 17 SOUTH AND HIV SUPPORT IN NSW: THEN AND NOW

When HIV first appeared in Australia in the early 1980s, there were no effective treatments and very few places for people to turn for help. Fear and stigma were widespread. Those affected, especially gay and bisexual men, were often isolated, discriminated against and left to face the epidemic without the support they needed.

In Sydney, one of the first places to respond with compassion was St Vincent’s Hospital in Darlinghurst. In 1985, the hospital opened Ward 17 South, a specialist outpatient service focused on the care of people living with and affected by HIV. At a time when the broader health system was struggling to respond, Ward 17 South became a vital source of medical support, emotional care and dignity for those confronting a terrifying new illness. Its role in those early years was not only about treatment, but also about building trust with LGBTQ+ communities during a time of fear and uncertainty.

That same year, ACON was formed by activists and community members determined to face the crisis with solidarity and compassion. ACON worked closely with services like Ward 17 South, offering grassroots care, home visits, education and advocacy. Together, they laid the foundation for what would become one of the most respected models of community and healthcare partnership in the country.

Today, HIV is a manageable condition. With the use of daily antiretroviral medications, people living with HIV can lead long and healthy lives. With appropriate treatment, the virus becomes undetectable in the body. This means it cannot be passed on to sexual partners. Known as ‘U equals U’, this principle has been central to reducing stigma and changing how we talk about HIV.

In 2025, ACON remains at the centre of support for people living with HIV in New South Wales. Its services span peer support, mental health, ageing programs, education and prevention. The focus remains on making sure no one is left behind.

We remember and honour the early years of care. We recognise the healthcare workers at Ward 17 South who showed courage and compassion, and the community members who stepped in when systems failed. As we look ahead, we remain committed to ending HIV transmission, confronting stigma, and ensuring dignity, support and health for all.
