CULTURE IS HEALING: SUPPORTING LGBTQ+SB FIRST NATIONS HEALTH

For generations, Indigenous voices have been silenced or ignored. Reclaiming culture and identity is not only powerful, it is political. ACON, NSW’s leading LGBTQ+ health organisation, is committed to supporting the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTQ+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy communities through programs built on pride, culture and community leadership.

First Nations LGBTQ+SB people have always been part of this land’s story. Yet many still face significant health challenges, including higher rates of mental health distress, suicide, homelessness and barriers to inclusive care. These issues are not caused by identity, but by the ongoing impacts of colonisation, systemic racism and discrimination, which can erode connection to culture, family and community.

ACON works in partnership with community to change this. Our First Nations Health Programs are created by and for mob, drawing on cultural identity, resilience and lived experience. Through peer education, culturally safe health promotion, social support, leadership opportunities and community gatherings, we create spaces where First Nations LGBTQ+SB people can connect, heal and thrive.

Improving health outcomes begins with listening and continues with action that supports leadership, self-expression and cultural safety in all areas of life, from healthcare and workplaces to celebrations of pride.

At ACON, we honour the strength of Blak queer voices and identities. Together, we can shape a future where all First Nations LGBTQ+SB people live healthy, connected and empowered lives.
