BREAKING THE SILENCE: RESPONDING TO SEXUAL, DOMESTIC AND FAMILY VIOLENCE IN LGBTQ+ COMMUNITIES
For too long, sexual, domestic and family violence (SDFV) in LGBTQ+ communities was invisible. It was dismissed by mainstream services, underreported to police, and rarely discussed publicly. Yet violence can affect anyone, no matter their sexuality, gender, or family structure.
Many LGBTQ+ people have experienced SDFV from partners, ex-partners, family members or carers. This violence takes many forms, including physical, emotional, psychological, financial, sexual, spiritual abuse and coercive control. It can also involve specific tactics called identity-based abuse such as threats to out someone, manipulation linked to gender history or HIV status, or abuse from family in the context of rejection or isolation based on a person being LGBTQ+
In the past, LGBTQ+ people were often excluded from support services. Survivors feared discrimination, disbelief, or having to answer inappropriate questions or explain themselves during moments of crisis. For many, silence felt like the only option. That silence is now being broken.
ACON leads efforts across NSW and Australia to raise awareness, improve services, and ensure LGBTQ+ people affected by violence are seen, heard and supported. One key initiative is Say It Out Loud, a national online resource designed specifically for LGBTQ+ communities to support healthy relationships, identify abuse, and access inclusive services. The platform features survivor stories, educational tools, and clear pathways to support, all created by and for LGBTQ+ people.
In addition, ACON provides free, confidential counselling and care coordination for LGBTQ+ who have experienced domestic, family or sexual violence. We also work with services nationwide to help them offer safe and affirming care to LGBTQ+ communities.
This work is built on a strengths-based approach that centres lived experience, autonomy, consent and community accountability. It focuses on promoting healthy relationships and providing the tools and support people need to heal.
Everyone deserves to feel safe in their relationships, their families, and their bodies. Everyone deserves care from services and people which respects who they are.
