SUPPORT WITHOUT SHAME: LGBTQ+ COMMUNITIES, SUBSTANCE USE AND HARM REDUCTION
Substance use has long been part of LGBTQ+ communities experiences of connection, release, pleasure, coping and celebration. From dancefloors to lounge rooms, from survival strategies to sexual and self-expression, alcohol and other drug use takes many forms. What matters most is how we respond with care, compassion and support that meets people where they are.
LGBTQ+ people use alcohol and other drugs at higher rates than the general population, not because of who they are but because of what they have experienced. Marginalisation, stigma, family rejection, trauma and criminalisation all contribute. At the same time, many also experience a strong sense of sexual freedom and liberation, which in turn influences how they engage with substances. Our relationships with drugs and alcohol are shaped by both challenge and celebration, with community, resilience and harm reduction playing vital roles.
ACON takes a non-judgemental, harm reduction approach. This means recognising that drug use happens and focusing on reducing risks, promoting safety and supporting people’s choices. Harm reduction respects autonomy, offers practical tools and ensures no one is left behind because of stigma or shame.
One of ACON’s most visible harm reduction programs is Rovers, a volunteer-led initiative providing care and information at LGBTQ+ events. Rovers are trained community members who help people stay safe at festivals, clubs and dancefloors. Whether someone is overwhelmed, unwell or just needs a quiet space and some water, Rovers are there to help without judgement or assumptions.
For evidence-based information on safer use, peer advice and honest discussion, Between The Lines is ACON’s online harm reduction resource. Created by and for LGBTQ+ people, it offers practical, sex-positive, party-smart information that’s easy to access.
ACON also provides free and confidential alcohol and other drug counselling for LGBTQ+ people across NSW. Whether someone wants to reduce use, quit or just talk about their relationship with substances, they can access inclusive support that respects their goals, identity and experience.
At its core, ACON’s approach is about care, choice and community. Everyone deserves support without shame and everyone’s wellbeing matters.
