INCLUSION IS MORE THAN A WORD: BUILDING SAFER SPACES FOR LGBTQ+ PEOPLE EVERYWHERE
For LGBTQ+ people, inclusion is not just a box to tick; it means safety, respect and belonging in all areas of life. Whether at work, on the sports field, or in healthcare, being able to show up as your full self matters. It impacts wellbeing, mental health, performance and dignity.
In the past, many of these spaces were not designed with LGBTQ+ people in mind. Discrimination at work, homophobia and transphobia in sport, and unsafe or non-affirming healthcare were common experiences. But after years of advocacy and education, hundreds of organisations and sporting clubs across Australia are now creating environments where LGBTQ+ people feel seen, valued and supported.
ACON has played a major role in this change through its Pride Inclusion Programs, a set of national initiatives helping organisations take real action to improve inclusion.
- Pride in Diversity is Australia’s leading program for LGBTQ+ workplace inclusion. It works with employers from many sectors to improve policies, practices and culture by providing training, resources and running the Australian Workplace Equality Index, the national benchmark for LGBTQ+ inclusion.
- Pride in Sport partners with organisations in the sport and recreation sector to make sport more welcoming for LGBTQ+ players, coaches, officials and fans, at every level from grassroots to elite.
- Pride in Health + Wellbeing partners with health and community care organisations to create more inclusive and culturally safe experiences for LGBTQ+ people accessing their services.
What makes these programs effective is their strong evidence base and close connection to lived experience. They listen to community voices and recognise that inclusion is ongoing work. It means facing harm, addressing gaps and being open to change.
True inclusion is more than rainbow logos once a year. It means building systems and structures that support and protect LGBTQ+ people every day.
